Spouse has just been going over oldest's various requirements between high school, community college, and university, and he happened to ask oldest if he wanted to go to graduation with his alternative school. No. No thank you. No way. Just send my diploma in the mail, and let me get on with the remainder of happy college life. Okay, I hate it when he equivocates. :) Somehow, I suspect it will be different response to the two younger extroverts. First off, I'm sending coffee supplies by mid-semester for you. :) That's a busy schedule for you, but I'm sure you'll make it work. And yeah, I get the concern about even the little changes. No judging here! We finally start here in another week (!?!), but I only have four, solid-packed days with three day weekends (less robotics tournaments and community service). Landry will take a full load of three college classes and one class at the local alternative school this fall. Kipp and Galen will take a full load of five classes each at the local alternative school and possibly archery through 4H. So, my role has switched from primary educator to chauffeur and homework overseer. I'm actually excited by the change, although I suspect I will have a more active role than I anticipate as the younger boys adjust to their new environment. For a couple of courses like Lord of the Rings or biology, I insist on reading the text with them each week, which actually slows them down but I feel the discussions are part of the learning. On other subjects like Thinkwell courses or Coursera courses, I almost purposefully take a hands off attitude to let them learn to manage their own learning. I will delve in if I see their scores declining, but I can usually pick up wherever they are. I guess that when I feel as you do, I will keep reminding myself that the most important tool we can give them is the ability to teach themselves. Maybe it's good to encourage them to teach you? He's been in a few times, but missed the game nights.

He is taking a Coursera class called Understanding Video Games that will look at the story lines and influences of literature, so even though it's specific to video games, I think it will be useful to him.

Many of his games have science themes, so I can still see how a science major may play out. I've also suggested looking for a different major and just loading up on many science classes for the purpose of game ideas.

Thank you again. It's good to have a few more threads to follow. :-)
Cyber Mommahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13617795256170148473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4435297673105726185.post-83758537071017268942014-09-04T19:50:02.344-04:002014-09-04T19:50:02.344-04:00Based on what I saw with the latest CheapAss games...Based on what I saw with the latest CheapAss games kickstarters, the game designers and the artists don't have to be the same people.

Maybe ask the guys at CheapAss games what skills are useful?

Or have him e-mail the people at Set Enterprises (Set, Quiddler, Five Crowns, Xactica, Karma) what they think?

Are there any game stores in town? A job working in one would give him insight into what people liked about games and what they looked for. The owners could also give him info about how they decide what to stock. Or, the store may host game nights where he might meet others interested in games.

My guess is that a business degree of some sort would be useful, but it's up to him whether he's happy getting "just the info" from a local school or whether he's interested in the contacts and potential business incubator potential of a bigger/more expensive school. I can also see that studying history/literature/mythology (not necessarily as a major, just as humanities distribution courses) would give someone a broader background of knowledge on which to base games.

Is he participating in any game design contests? I found a couple in a quick search:
* http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1182028/2014-card-game-design-contest
* http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1179655/2014-solitaire-print-and-play-contest

I know it's not exactly kid-friendly, but Cards Against Humanity has generated a lot of buzz for card games again, I think. And their business model is interesting (you can download their cards and print them yourself, or buy the cards from them).Jo in OKCnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4435297673105726185.post-17330272739912103692014-08-15T19:09:16.021-04:002014-08-15T19:09:16.021-04:00We don't start for another month, thank God.
